What is sales Tax?
As you know, when buying goods at a store, governments will charge a sale tax on goods and services. Taxes will change depending on your location (VAT, GST, TPS, etc.). When you complete a purchase on Rise from outside of Canada, we will not charge you taxes. This is because the authorities of your country will be collecting those from you to protect their local economy, just like if you were buying in a local store. We wish we were living in a free tax world, but we unfortunately are not.
Will I pay customs Duty?
*The information provided below is for illustrative purpose only and should not be regarded as definitive or accurate.
Customs duty thresholds and regulations vary by country and can change frequently.
Whether you pay customs duty depends on the value of your order and the specific legislation of the importing country.
In many cases, lower-value orders may be exempt from customs duties and taxes, but this varies by country.
Here are some example thresholds (based on previously available data, which may no longer be accurate):
- Canada: No customs, or duties will be charged to Canadians. Federal and Provincial taxes will be charged at checkout. Please refer to your province's taxes on goods for more information.
- United States: Goods valued below $800 USD were previously exempt from duties, but as of August 29, 2025, the de minimis exemption has been suspended under new U.S. tariff policies, and all shipments may now be subject to duties regardless of value.
- Australia: $1,000 AUD
- United Kingdom: £135
- Ireland: €150
- Sweden: 1,600 SEK
- New Zealand: $60 NZD
*These figures are examples only and may not reflect current regulations. We strongly recommend checking your local government’s website or contacting your country’s border agency for the most up-to-date customs duty thresholds and requirements.
International
We ship most of our orders with Canada Post unless you select another carrier at checkout due to their efficiency, and favourable rates. An additional benefit is their strong International relations. This results in pretty much each and every country removing regular brokerage handling fees, and greatly reducing customs fees.
However, you are still subject to customs fees varying in amount based on your location. Choosing not to pay customs fees, and return the package back to Rise means any additional shipping costs, potential brokerage fees or handling fees incurred by Rise will be deducted from your refund.
If you are concerned, please contact your local customs office to receive an estimate of the cost before placing your order.
